Resident Evil, known in Japan as Biohazard, Is a mean survival horror franchise of success that began life in 1996 as a video game developed by Capcom, entitled Resident Evil and created by Shinji Mikami.
In late September 2016 copies sold in the series amounted to 71 million units. The series enjoys great popularity in the environment of the survival horror video games Resident Evil Costumes
. The environment has been heavily influenced both by George A. Romero and his zombie movies, both from the series of horror video games Alone in the Dark.

The success of this franchise has caused the emergence of several video games, comics, books and Hollywood films on the series. While the games follow a chronology, there are several changes in the plot of the film, which stories are considered separately.

Resident Evil debuted on PlayStation in 1996. The development of the saga began in 1993 and was created by Capcom designer Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara. Originally the idea of Resident Evil came from a 1989 NES game called Sweet Home. Resident Evil borrowed many elements from Sweet Home, including the setting of the mansion, puzzles, and even the door of the loading screen. To make the series more attractive for the western market, the title was changed from Biohazard to Resident Evil by Capcom USA (apparently the rights of the Biohazard name already belonged to an American rock band) Cosplay Shop
.

Most games in the series are in the third person with two-dimensional environments. However Resident Evil was one of the first titles to use this style of play on consoles, since the technique was already used by the series Alone in the Dark for Windows. Resident Evil was the first game to be called "survival horror." The game was later ported to the Sega Saturn. Thanks to the commercial success and the positive criticism that leads to the production of two sequels, Resident Evil 2 in 1998 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis in 1999, both released for PlayStation. A conversion of Resident Evil 2 was released for the Nintendo 64. In addition, these versions of all three titles were released for Microsoft Windows. The fourth game of the series, Resident Evil Code: Veronica, was developed for Dreamcast and released in 2000, followed by the titles of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. Resident Evil Code: Veronica was later re-released for Dreamcast in Japan in a form updated as Code: Veronica full version, which included slight modifications, and with nine minutes of extra footage. This updated version was later ported to the PlayStation 2 and GameCube as Code Veronica X.

In subsequent years, Shinji Mikami has signed an exclusive contract with Nintendo Samurai Warriors Costumes
. The next three games of the series, a remake of the first Resident Evil Rebirth and prequelResident Evil Zero, both published in 2002, as Resident Evil 4 are all initially emerged as a GameCube exclusive. Resident Evil 4 is then released for Windows, PlayStation 2 and Wii (as well as in HD versions for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One with the HD version of Resident Evil Code: Veronica X). In addition, the GameCube has received conversions of previous Resident Evil followed. Despite this exclusivity agreement between Capcom and Nintendo, Capcom has released several spin-off titles Resident Evil for PlayStation 2.
